Carey is an eclectic Hartford, CT based indie group fronted by songwriter Peter Listen and comprised of friends Dylan Healy (Stadia), Emma Trejo, and Maggiejean Martinez. Drawing from folk, neo-psychedelia, and slowcore, Carey shapes sound into the kind of antique time machine you might find in a grandparent’s attic. While such a machine certainly has the capacity to transport one back and forth through time, its primary function is something more unique, ambitious precisely in its modesty: to preserve time, to wrap it in a blanket, or give it as a gift. In this experiment, Carey encourages listeners to ask a series of questions. Can we hold the past gently, not possessively? Can we witness a moment’s appearance and disappearance simultaneously? What would it take to do so? The answers to these questions arrive in an open-ended fashion, through the music itself. And still, the answers never damage the mystery.
